Answering key questions on ZEP’s transition Carbon Management Europe
In 2026, the Zero Emissions Platform (ZEP) will mark its 20th anniversary. Coinciding with this milestone, the organisation is taking an important step forward: changing its name to Carbon Management Europe (CME). Below, we explain why the change is happening, what it means in practice, and what remains unchanged.
Why change the name now?
When ZEP was founded in 2005, its name referred to Zero Emissions Fossil Fuel Power Plants. At the time, this accurately reflected the organisation’s focus on reducing emissions in the power sector.
Twenty years on, the scope of ZEP’s work is broader.
Today, the organisation covers the full industrial carbon management value chain, including CO₂ capture, transport, use, and storage, resulting in emission reductions and/or carbon removals. Its expertise spans multiple industrial sectors and supports EU policymaking to enable deployment at scale in line with the EU’s climate goals.
In this context, Carbon Management Europe (CME) better reflects what the organisation does today.
Why the name “Carbon Management Europe”?
“Carbon management” aligns closely with the terminology used by the European Union, particularly the European Commission’s concept of industrial carbon management. It reflects a theme that is now embedded in EU climate policy.
“Europe” makes the organisation’s geographical mandate explicit and reinforces its role as a European platform, supporting EU climate objectives and deployment across the continent.
Together, the name is easier to recognise and to understand.
In short, a clearer name to support our mission.
Does the mission change?
No.
While the name is changing, the organisation’s mission, role, and activities remain the same.
As Carbon Management Europe (CME), the organisation will continue to:
- Act as the official advisor to the European Union on industrial carbon management
- Work to accelerate and enable deployment in line with the EU’s climate goals
- Provide science-driven, evidence-based policy advice
- Draw on the expertise of a broad, multi-stakeholder membership
This is a targeted evolution designed to strengthen clarity, not a change in direction.
Is this a rebrand?
No. This is not a full rebrand.
ZEP refreshed its visual identity in 2025 to better showcase the values and mission of the platform. That identity will remain in place.
- The logo – which represents closing the carbon cycle – stays the same
- Colours and graphic language remain unchanged
Only the organisation’s name is being updated.
What about governance and legal status?
The name change does not affect the organisation’s legal status or governance.
- The legal entity remains the same
- Governance structures, statutes, and working groups are unchanged
- Membership, decision-making processes, and ways of working remain the same
The organisation retains complete legal and institutional continuity. Only the legal name will change.
Does this affect ZEP’s relationship with the European Commission?
No.
Carbon Management Europe continues in the same advisory role, supports the European Technology and Innovation Platform (ETIP) Carbon Management, and maintains the same trusted relationships with EU institutions.
In fact, the new name strengthens alignment with Commission terminology, reinforcing the organisation’s role rather than altering it.
What changes in practice?
From a practical standpoint, the transition is designed to be seamless.
- Social media accounts, email addresses, and the website will be updated
- Redirects will ensure continued access to content and contacts
- Past publications will remain available under the ZEP name
- New outputs will be published under Carbon Management Europe (CME)
Nothing will be lost during the transition.
How should external audiences refer to the organisation?
After the public launch on 4 May 2026, the organisation should be referred to as Carbon Management Europe (CME).
During a transition period, references such as “Carbon Management Europe (formerly ZEP)” may be used.
The abbreviation CME will be used where appropriate.
When will the change take effect?
The renaming will be launched on 4 May 2026. The launch will coincide with the release of an updated website and a broader communications rollout.
Members and friends of ZEP/CME will be invited to celebrate this milestone shortly after.
